看美剧“读懂”英语：You caught me off guard

许多人喜欢看美剧“学”英语。首先，看美剧不是问题，问题是“怎么看？”，看的美剧“怎么懂？”。

多数人以为看了美剧用中文“懂了”里面的英语就算“看懂了”。

这是“懂”英语的误区所在：说到底你还是“只懂”中文，“不懂”英语。

看美剧“懂”英语，至少你“懂”了两点：懂查英英字典，懂/能说它的英语(意思)。完整地说一句英语就是“英语思维”。我们很多人除了“懂”中文外，没有“懂”以上两点。

你“懂”下面美剧台词了吗？

一、在每一个人都在想它的中文意思是什么的时候，我们去查英英字典

1) Yahoo caught off guard meaning

To engage, take advantage of, or seize upon one when one is not especially careful, vigilant, or prepared for danger or surprises.

这个“费解”一点，可以忽略：不过其中的surprise“已经点题”，足矣！

3) Cambridge:to surprise someone, esp. in a way that makes the person feel confused or uncertain:

字典不同，用词也不同，但意思一样。这无形中也训练了我们的表达方法：还是(已知)英语to surprise的意思。

4) Collins:If someone catches you off guard, they surprise you by doing something you do not expect. If something catches you off guard, it surprises you by happening when you are not expecting it.

你不一定全部“看懂”这些英语解释，看懂已知英语surprise足矣！

而且，我最喜欢用Collins，它分明就是给你提供一句完整的“英语思维”啊，而不是只言片语的单词。

二、该轮到训练“完整的英语思维”了

1.Okay.I got you.If you catch someone off guard, you mean you surprise them ( by doing something they do not expect).

说白了不就是surprise someone嘛！

也可以这样“练”口语。

2.Okay.I got you.When you surprise someone,you can say You catch them off guard.But To catch them off guard is much better

For example.

1.The invitation had caught me off guard=really surprised me.

2.The news caught her completely off guard(surprised her) – she didn't know what to say.

用英语学英语让我们养成思考“好”和“更好”的修辞学学英语的高度的习惯和能力，而不再是问“对错”的语法层面。这就是区别。
